“So Doc,” I said impishly, “you want the good news or the bad news?”
“Tell me the good news,” he dropped his briefcase and straightened his shirt, his massive linebacker frame falling into the leather armchair like all of Earth had to brace for his deposition.
“Well, the bad news is that things haven’t gone too well in the past week. My heart still aches. I can’t be complete,” I paused just long enough for him to process but not long enough for him to interrupt. “The good news is that I saved money on car insurance by switching to another company.”
Doc’s face crinkled up like a giant scrutinizing a tiny man. A spark shot between his ears upon realization of the punchline. He laughed. “Something happened.”
I smiled, “Yeah, I’m on now.”
